At Kadina Memorial School we believe Literacy underpins all curriculum areas and is vital for the future success of our students.

Literacy involves students listening to, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating oral, print, visual and digital texts, and using and modifying language for different purposes in a range of contexts.

Literacy is a focus of the Site Learning Plan and is resourced with the Literacy Improvement Team led by the R-12 Literacy Improvement Co-ordinator to ensure students are engaging in learning to meet the challenges of 21st century learning.

The Australian Curriculum requires the literacy of each learning area to be taught explicitly with frequent opportunities for students to practice their understandings.

Specialised intervention programs ensure learners have every opportunity to improve their learning to be at or above year level standard.

The KMS Literacy Agreements ensure all R-12 specialist subjects are responsible for teaching their subject specific Literacy demands.

Becoming literate is not simply about knowledge and skills. Certain behaviours and dispositions assist students to become effective learners who are confident and motivated to use their literacy skills broadly. They include students managing their own learning to be self-sufficient; working harmoniously with others; being open to ideas, opinions and texts from and about diverse cultures; returning to tasks to improve and enhance their work; and being prepared to question the meanings and assumptions in texts.

Such learners will become informed citizens who are continually ‘Learning for our future.’

School Library

Our school library provides a welcoming and resource-rich environment for all students. The library is open during lesson times, as well as before school (8:00am–8:45am), at lunch time (12:40pm–1:20pm), and after school (3:05pm–3:30pm). Access at other times can be arranged as needed.

Students are encouraged to make the most of our extensive collection, with most resources available for borrowing. Each student may borrow up to ten items for a loan period of three weeks. Junior Primary students are encouraged to bring a durable library bag for transporting books to and from school to help protect borrowed materials.

Lost Books

Students are responsible for all resources they borrow. In the case of lost items, payment will be required to cover replacement costs. Accounts for lost books are generated periodically, and the school may initiate its debt recovery policy if necessary. This applies to all library resources, including textbooks, fiction, and non-fiction materials.

Textbooks are due back at the end of each borrowing period (semester or year), and students remain responsible for these until they are returned.
